Yale Physicians and Second Opinions

Getting a second opinion by a physician can be a critical step to take in certain situations. Here is a list of the most important reasons to seek the opinion of another doctor:

  • When major surgery has been recommended
  • When a rare disease has been diagnosed
  • When any questions have not been answered for you
  • When a serious illness or condition has been diagnosed
  • When a life-threatening disease has been diagnosed
  • When treatment recommended has serious potential risks or side effects
  • When the diagnosis is difficult and needs additional medical opinion to be certain
  • When a treatment is recommended that is excessively expensive
  • When you feel uncomfortable about the physician's skills and abilities
  • When a course of treatment is not effective

Getting a second opinion most often results in the second physician affirming what the first physician initially recommended. However, in the situations described here, it can be worthwhile to gain this reassurance and confidence in your care. In other situations, the second physician's opinion does differ from that of the first physician. In this care, you will be better equipped to make an informed decision about the next step in your care.
