Yale Center for Advanced Heart Failure, Mechanical Circulatory Support, and Heart Transplantation

The Center for Advanced Heart Failure, Mechanical Circulatory Support and Heart Transplantation provides comprehensive evaluation, management and treatment for patients with heart failure.  Patients have access to the full spectrum of life-saving heart care, ranging from the least-invasive drug therapies to state-of-the art surgery, including transplant.

The Center is often among the first in the country to use new medicines, procedures and devices for every degree of heart failure and is involved in multiple clinical trials.

Multispecialty Collaboration

The Center's multidisciplinary team is composed of specialists representing every aspect of cardiac care, including heart failure cardiologists, electrophysiologists, cardiac surgeons, as well as dedicated nurse practitioners, nurse coordinators, pharmacists, financial counselors, a social worker, a dietician, palliative care specialists, transplant immunologists, intensivists, psychologists and exercise physiologists.

Our goal is to provide each patient a tailored plan of treatment addressing their physical, mental and emotional needs with nurse-led clinics, telemanagement, nutrition counseling and social services.

LVAD as a permanent solution

Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) has received certification from the Joint Commission - the nation's predominant standards-setting and accrediting body in health care - to implant left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) into patients with end-stage heart failure as a permanent or destination therapy, not just as a temporary bridge to transplant.

Director:  Abeel Mangi, MD

Treatment options available to patients include:

  • Evaluation and medical tailored therapy for advanced heart failure
  • Cardiac resynchronization therapy
  • Implantable cardioverter defibrillators
  • Ablation therapy for atrial and ventricular arrhythmias
  • High risk coronary revascularization and valve repair in carefully selected patients
  • Complex and reoperative heart operations
  • Cardiac transplantation
  • Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs)
  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
  • Septal myectomy and surgical treatment of left ventricular out-flow tract obstruction
  • Advanced care planning
  • Opportunity for participation in a wide range of clinical research activities
  • Monthly support and education classes
  • Cardiac rehabilitation for patients living with heart failure
