Cytogenetics Laboratory

The Cytogenetics Laboratory performs chromosomal analysis on lymphocytes, fibro-blasts, bone marrow cells, amniotic fluid cells, chorionic villus tissues, and gynecological tumors. In situ and other molecular techniques using DNA probes are increasingly important to complement traditional chromosomal analysis. Studies on peripheral blood lymphocytes and cultured fibroblasts from skin and other tissues come from individuals with congenital anomalies, growth retardation, mental retardation, and persons with reproductive problems. All available cytogenetic techniques, including high-resolution banding, are employed to identify the type and nature of complex structural aberrations present in cancer cells.

Special services offered by this laboratory include:

  • Prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities
  • Chromosome analysis on short-term cultures established from solid tumors
  • Karyotyping of bone marrow or blood cells from patients with leukemia and lymphoma
