The Adult Cystic Fibrosis Center in the Winchester Chest Clinic has continued to grow. The program partners with the pediatric CF Program, conducting an active transition clinic in the pediatric subspecialty clinic area. Once patients are deemed appropriate for the transition process by their pediatric providers, they are seen in the pediatric subspecialty clinic by Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program physicians who review their medical history and current issues. A plan for transition to the adult CF Program is then mapped out, with some choosing to gradually transition their care over as long as one year, and others transitioning immediately.
Over the course of the last year, the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program has been recognized by the CF Foundation as a certified adult CF care center, and has coordinated with the Nutrition and Social Work departments to have their services available on designated CF clinic days. The program is enrolling patients in clinical trials evaluating short- and long-term use of inhaled aztreonam lysinate for patients colonized with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and are considering enrollment in a number of additional pharmaceutical trials.
The program is staffed by pulmonary and critical care physicians, nurse coordinators (who help triage phone messages, assist with medication questions and refills, and troubleshoot insurance problems), a nutritionist, a social worker, and a respiratory therapist (who performs pulmonary function tests and can assist with issues regarding airway clearance).
The center continues to look for ways to streamline patient care, and hopes to institute quality improvement initiatives in the coming year to help stay abreast of ongoing developments in CF care. Suggestions and feedback from patients are welcome and the center looks forward to continued breakthroughs in the treatment of CF.
