The 18-bed Maternal Special Care Unit cares for women who have special needs during pregnancy or after delivery. Maternity patients might be admitted to this unit for premature labor, high blood pressure, diabetes, or other medical problems that may affect pregnancy.
While most women are admitted during their last trimester, some are admitted as early as 20 weeks, coming and going several times during their pregnancy, or staying for the duration of their pregnancies. Women who are 19 weeks pregnant or less are usually admitted to the Gynecology Unit. Nurses provide expert care as well as the emotional support that is so important for the patient and her family.
