The Occupational and Environmental Medicine Program comprises physicians and industrial hygienists who provide comprehensive evaluation of workplace and environmental health problems due to toxic chemicals, physical factors and biologic agents. Patients with suspected environmental health problems or concerns can tap into the full range of resources offered by the program. Diagnostic testing and evaluations are conducted by staff with expertise in the entire spectrum of environmental hazards. A unique feature of this program is the capability to follow-up and pursue identified or suspected problems at the environmental source. A field team, led by an industrial hygienist, can determine whether hazards may have contributed to present illness, and subsequently, assess the possibility of future risks. Strategies for reducing risk for individuals possibly exposed to a toxin or other hazard can then be developed. If necessary, a plan is established for future surveillance. Because of the unpredictable nature of environmental health problems, the program provides site evaluations under emergency conditions when the need arises, with 24-hour coverage.
