The Crisis Intervention Unit (CIU), located in the Yale-New Haven Hospital Emergency Room, provides psychiatric assessment, treatment and referrals for adults who are experiencing a psychiatric emergency with severe symptoms that are difficult to control. This secure unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary team from psychiatry, nursing and social work. Children and adolescents under the age of 16 who are in immediate danger, particularly those who may cause harm to themselves or others are evaluated in the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital Emergency Room.
