Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

The Yale-New Haven Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art, 11-bed intensive care unit. Patients are admitted to the unit from other sites within the hospital, including the emergency department, the operating room, and the clinics. A highly skilled critical care transport team is available 24 hours a day to bring children from other hospitals to the Children's Hospital safely and expeditiously. Referring physicians can expect to receive regular updates on the progress of their patients.

Special services offered by the PICU include:
  • Treatment and evaluation of infants, children, and adolescents with life-threatening medical and surgical problems
  • Consultation with physicians at other hospitals to assist in the evaluation of children with complex and potentially critical illnesses
  • Transportation team to assist in the transfer of patients to the Children's Hospital from outlying institutions
