Clinical Microbiology

The Clinical Microbiology Laboratory receives specimens for the diagnosis and management of diseases caused by bacterial, mycobacterial, fungal and parasitic pathogens. The microbiology laboratory utilizes direct examination and detection procedures, as well as cultures, to isolate and identify pathogens and, where appropriate, to determine antibiotic sensitivity. For selected pathogens, the laboratory also performs molecular tests for rapid identification of pathogen-specific oligonucleotides. The faculty who oversee the microbiology laboratory are available for consultation on the selection and interpretation of microbiological tests performed here and elsewhere.
