Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and Surgical Emergencies

Yale Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Surgical Emergencies offers the comprehensive management for victims of accidental and non-accidental injury, as well as patients with general surgical emergencies and patients requiring admission to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit for the management of intra-abdominal catastrophes. Yale-New Haven Hospital is the Level 1 Trauma Center for southwestern Connecticut and the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the state for pediatric trauma patients. The Trauma Service serves as the regional referral source for the comprehensive management of traumatically injured patients. Dedicated, independent emergency rooms for both adults and children provide the cornerstones for the center. A broad-based multidisciplinary approach is employed in the management of the critically ill and injured. Surgeons are board certified or board eligible in both general surgery and surgical critical care, and are capable of providing comprehensive care for a wide variety of illnesses and injuries. For patients requiring referral from areas remote from New Haven, helicopter transportation is available.

A communications center streamlines and coordinates the transfer of patients from other institutions. To arrange for a transfer to Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Surgical Emergencies at Yale, please call 1-800-285-7775.

Special services offered by this section include:
  • The regional Level 1 Trauma Center for both adults and pediatrics
  • Treatment of complex and multi-system trauma cases, including complex orthopedic, neurosurgical, vascular and maxillofacial trauma
  • Management of critically ill surgical patients
